Find out the water leakage point in your faucets
Often you open the hose, and water starts to spray outside the faucet. The reason can be the faucet body or the hose attached to the faucet. The water can be coming from the bonnet of a typical faucet. When the bonnet goes up and down over time, the bonnet nut gets loose and worn, which causes water to come out.
Another main reason behind the hose leakage can be the crack or breakage in the rubber gasket, which is present in the hose attachment. Sometimes the washer in the bonnet is not working, letting the water make some space and drizzle continuously.
In winters, water in the hose can turn into ice. Ultimately, the pipe expands and cracks from some areas causing water leakage. Your water meter can indicate the continuous flow. In case, you find out water is still flowing even after turning off all the faucets in-home, look for leakage in the garden.
Try to find out the reason behind the leakage of your faucet or hose so that you can sort out the issue.
How to Fix a Faucet Leaking When a Hose Is Attached to it?
If you observe that after attaching the hose to your water spigot, water is spraying from the side. It means there is some leaking point. The point can mainly be in the rubber washer or the bonnet gaskets. So you need to check both areas. Follow these steps.
2.1. Fix the Hose Attachment/Connector by Changing the Rubber Washer.
Things you will need
- Plier
- Screwdriver
- Teflon tape
- Rubber washer(in case older one is ruptured)
Steps:
- Detach the hose attachment by using a plier.
- Look in the hose pipe connector.
- You will see a rubber washer.
- Take it out and look if there are any cracks or breakages.
- If your rubber washer is crack, you need to replace it.
- Take the new washer and insert it into the hose pipe.
- Now screw the hose with a spigot again.
- Tighten the hose up with a plier again.
- Now open the water flow and check if the water is still dripping.
- Your water will stop coming off from the hose attachment.
2.2. Fix the Inside of the Faucet Attached to a Hose
In case, the faucet attached to the hose is dripping water from the top of your faucet or droplets are continuously coming out, there is a need to repair it. The stems that engage the faucet handle up and down can rust or worn out over time. In some cases, rubber washers in the faucet handle can also crack or loosen up, giving space to water drizzle from tiny space. In such cases:
- Take a plier.
- Loosen the bonnet and stem by using a plier.
- Take out the stem of the faucet and check out the rubber washer.
- The rubber washer is present at the end of the stem, stopping the water from drizzling.
- If it is crack, change it with a new one.
- You won’t see any water drizzling out from small areas down below.
In cases, the water is coming from the top of the faucet. It means the leakage issue is in the top area. For this purpose, you need to look into the bonnet of the faucet.
- Take a plier and loosen up the bonnet right below the faucet/spigot head.
- Now upon moving it, you will see a rubber gasket in here.
- The gasket failed to stop the water flow, and hence water came out from the top handle.
- Replace this gasket if it is crack or put it properly against it.
- Tighten the faucet again, and you will see the water has stopped coming out.
2.3. Consider a Faucet or Hose Replacement if Nothing Works
In case, you have tried all the ways, and still, water is dripping out, you should consider replacing it.
- Turn off the pivotal connection of the water supply.
- Now take a pipe wrencher and move it in the anti-clockwise direction. The old faucet will come off.
- Now remove the debris on the main pipe. Clean it.
- Apply some Teflon tape on the threaded pipe area and put on a new faucet.
- Tighten it with the wrench.
- Check out the water flow. If the water leak has stopped. It means it has been successfully installed.
